The CATALYS® precision laser system makes it possible to automate certain steps of lens replacement surgery that are traditionally performed manually by the surgeon using instruments such as forceps or a blade.
The ophthalmologist will program a treatment plan designed specifically for your eye condition, including one or more of the following steps:
- Corneal incisions: When deemed necessary and safe by the ophthalmologist, the laser can create the main incision and relaxing limbal incisions, with length and depth controlled down to the micron.
- Anterior capsulotomy: The quality of the opening in the front capsule of the crystalline lens is essential for the proper positioning of the intraocular lens inside the capsular bag and, ultimately, for the accuracy of the visual correction. The laser creates a perfectly round opening, with a predetermined diameter and centered on the capsular bag. This promotes uniform overlap of the front surface of the intraocular lens and more predictable positioning compared with a manually performed capsulorhexis.
- Lens fragmentation: When deemed necessary and safe by the ophthalmologist, the laser can divide the crystalline lens into small pieces before the actual phacoemulsification. This helps reduce the amount of ultrasound energy needed before the lens is aspirated, particularly in the presence of a mature cataract.
These steps are completed in just a few seconds with the precision and repeatability of the femtosecond laser. It is paired with a three-dimensional imaging system that identifies the surfaces of the eye during surgery (live OCT), determines safety parameters, and continuously guides the laser treatment throughout the procedure.
